To all the naysayers who spoke against the Downtown Commons(the previous location of CityCenter)......shame on you. Went to a free concert put on by Shadowbox Live on Sunday. The green space is lovely, including a carousel.
I am not good at estimating crowds, but I would guess that there were at least 2000 people enjoying a wonderful evening with great music. Families, young people, older people all came together to enjoy Back to the Garden (a Woodstock reflection).
Speaking of the garden, so glad that I am back in my garden. The last few days have been incredible that I have, almost, forgotten that horrible winter, the emphasis on Almost. When I was recently whining to a friend about my out of control weeds, she said "oh , but you love doing the garden" I quickly corrected her that I love the garden, but who loves weeding. With reflection, it is the garden itself that I love, not so much the gardening. I treat the garden as another space that I can decorate, but since, as my niece would say, I do not have "peeps" to do the garden, I am the gardener.
I am passionate that I can go out to the garden, as I did this morning, and pick fresh flowers for the house................
it just doesn't get any better than this.
Well, I just had 30 bags of mulch delivered, and as I mentioned there are no peeps to do the work, so it's out to the garden for me.
Every day may not be good, but there is something good in every day.......Put on your Pearls girls, and have a grand day.

Went to see Louder than a Bomb at the Drexel Theatre......the movie was well done, and the subject matter was fabulous. Louder than a Bomb is a poetry slam contest conducted with high school students. The movie followed four students, and their teams in the Chicago area. The students write the poetry and then perform at a city wide high school competition. The kids were amazing....they each had experienced pain and anger, and were able to tell their story through poetry. The message gleaned from this movie, is that with encouragement and support kids can produce incredible results.
After the movie was over the director and one of the teachers from Chicago spoke and answered questions. Another bonus, a young woman from Eastmoor Academy who had won a poetry slam in Columbus, delivered her own poem.
The after movie discourse was wonderful, and shows why the Drexel Theatre is so special.....where else could you see a wonderful movie on a Saturday night and speak with the director and "actor". I love that Jeff Frank spoke to the audience, and that he brings such interesting shows to our city......the Drexel is a neighborhood gem, and we are lucky to have it.

Happiness is in the air. Last Sunday, on the CBS News Sunday Morning, which is my new favorite TV show, as CBS is my new favorite channel.......love, love love CBS, did an entire segment on happiness showing "happy" cities, and cities not so happy.
The research showed that people who exercise, get enough rest and eat well tend to be more happy. Those interviewed expressed a philosophy that happiness had a correlation to a connection with others.

I believe that happiness comes from within, and that one needs to master becoming happy oneself, and then the connection and relationships with others can follow.
Yesterday I went to hear Goldie Hawn speak at the Ohio Theatre, sponsored by the Women's Fund of Central Ohio. Speaking of happy, she made everyone in the audience joyful and happy. She looks fabulous, has the most incredible figure, and oh that giggle with the smile.
Goldie Hawn established the Hawn foundation about 8 years ago, which now is doing work with Scholastic Inc. measuring happiness, and teaching techniques to young people to attain happiness. I believe that the program teaches children how the brain works, so that they can learn to reduce stress, and harness the power of the brain to feel better allowing an increase in better learning. This program called MindUp reduces aggressive behavior and increases optimism and positive thinking. It gives children enhanced self awareness. I think this program should be made available to adults as well.

Today is another sunny wonderful day in Columbus, Ohio, and the garden is calling.

Continuing on with my obsession for "Burlesque", bought the DVD last night at Target......have now watched an additional 2X. I forgot to mention that Christina Aguilera wears a dress, well sort of a dress, made totally out of pearls in one of the numbers.......it doesn't get any better than that for one who loves pearls. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, oh wait, isn't it supposed to begin looking like Spring...today is March 30, and it is snowing, again. The gray makes me tired, hungry, and depressed that I am tired and hungry......I am sleeping too much, but I can't seem to stay awake, and I am totally non-productive. Well enough about me.........

I have become completely obsessed with the movie"Burlesque"......watched it 4 times over the week-end, and oh, the music is the best. If you have a chance, visit itunes, and download the soundtrack.........it makes you happy, and want to get up and dance, which is my new exercise regime, and hopefully will get me out of this funk of being tired, cold and hungry........ I watched ,the American, starring George Clooney the other day, and the only thing I can say is, "what was he thinking"? It had to be one of the worst movies I have ever watched. There were about 12 lines of dialogue in the first hour, and George had this pensive, distressed look which probably came from the realization that he consented to do the movie. I am sure he was well compensated and let's face it, we all make choices based on finances at times, but really this was a bad decision no matter how much he was paid. George, put on a tux and make a romantic comedy......it worked well for Cary Grant.

The sun is shinning after the "BIG" storm which in all honesty was not all that big, and this is coming from a person who is beyond nervous driving during a storm.
I had to drive to work at 5:00 pm last night for a bridal event which took me 1 hour to drive 11 miles. I called my son Benjamin as I headed down the road, and he was very calming telling me to drive slowly......I told him I was still in 1st gear, when he stopped laughing, I said I would call him later. I will tell you that sand bags in the trunk make all the difference when you drive a small car.
I made it home in time to watch the new show, "Fairly Legal", on the USA channel. It is a great show, well written, fast paced, good acting.......everything an hour of TV should be...Thursday nights at 10:00 pm.

............speaking of fashion and style, Rebecca Moses states that style rests deep in our soul and is our most important form of expression. Style communicates to those around us who we are. Style is not about buying designer clothing, or spending vast sums of money, it is an attitude, a way of thinking. I think one must be comfortable with the fashion choices one makes, and learn to have confidence in our choices. I am concerned that most people I see shopping at the mall or dining out give no thought to their style........the message is "I don't care", or maybe more importantly, "I don't get it". We seem to be a lazy group, not willing to take a few extra moments to express our style.

European women, especially French women absolutely get it.....they exude style, and they are not about quantity of items.......it is definitely an attitude, a self confidence, a self assured demeanor.

I recently read that color in fashion is one of the major faux pas that we make. If you have a reddish complexion, don't wear red, and if you have dark circles under your eyes don't wear black; oooops black is my color of choice, and yes I do occasionally have those dreaded dark circles, so I guess I will be in search of a new concealer.

The article also mentioned that fit, especially in trousers, is extremely important, and ignored by many.

So regardless if your style is traditional, contemporary, or hip hop, take the time to express yourself, and present yourself with your best foot forward.

We had a beautiful April, which flew by, and today is the first of May. It is gently raining today, and turning the garden ever so green. I don't remember my garden being this lush, and green this early. I really have little room for any planting, but I am anxious to plant my pots with bright red geraniums and brilliant blue hydrangeas.

Mother's Day is next Sunday which is usually the date I use for planting annuals, however in Columbus, Ohio, do we really ever know when mother superior, AKA Mother Nature, will decide that one last frost is due. The adirondak chair was made by Todd Rosen 10 years ago, and given to me for Mother's Day. Does it get any better than a handcrafted gift from a son, and the garden.

Speaking of Mother's Day, nothing says I love you Mom like a string of pearls. Girls Wear Pearls has some lovely new designs done with czech glass pearls, and mother of pearl beads which are the softest, most lovely irredescent color of gray.

Today is a tribute to Spring, which officially starts tomorrow....it is so glorious out today, and I am filled with spring fever. I have opened up the windows, and the spring air is delicious...there is a slight breeze coming in, and I am feeling energized, and somewhat contemplative, which I know is a bit of a contradiction.

I just came back from a walk with Simon, and now I really need to head to the studio, but it is too wonderful near the window.

I was looking at some new mother-of-pearl beads on line, and realized that it has been almost 3 years since I started Girls Wear Pearls. The 3 years have flown, and I feel as though I have always been working with pearls.

I made my first pearl necklace, with help from my friend Denise, for my niece Meredith's, wedding, and she is ready to celebrate her third anniversary, and her son, Sawyer's first birthday.

Now her sister, Hallie, is getting married, and I need to create another pearl necklace to wear to her wedding.

I had a pearl necklace that I inherited from my mother which was a combination of my grandmother's pearls and my mom's pearls. I made 3 bracelets with the pearls.........

one I gave to Meredith when she completed her PhD., one I gave to Hallie when she graduated from law school, and one I kept for myself. I know that I am wearing this treasured bracelet to the wedding, and I hope that the nieces will as well...a connection to our heritage, the last of the Albert women.........

February is almost over, and Spring is soon to follow. Actually the sun was out for a slight moment which always energizes me. It seems appropriate to think about organizing my studio, closets, etc.
I am a "casual" follower of feng shui which translates into I love the concept, but I tweak the details. One of my favorite books is by Skye Alexander......10-Minute Feng Shui. Ms. Alexander states that much of feng shui is common sense, and the inner and outer worlds are related. Our home outwardly mirrors our emotional state. In the most simplistic terms, a cluttered home respresents a confused state of being.
Positive energy cannot flow if the home is a cluttered space. I know that when my studio, which my friend Gail lovingly calls the"boiler room" is disorganized and cluttered, my creativity is hampered. Removing clutter makes you more efficient and gives you more room for opportunities to come into your life.
It is necessary to have good lighting in the studio or work area which increases the amount of chi (positive energy). I have a variety of lights which direct the light onto my work table, as well as having a small table Ott light. I have wonderful twinkle lights hanging everywhere as well, although they do not provide true light they provide a festive mood which energizes me. I recently purchased a marvelous candle from the Sharon Weiss Gallery in the Short North that I burn now all the time when I am in the studio, and it gives the studio the most delicious feel.
I have painted my studio white which is the color of purity and protection, and according to Ms. Alexander provides security for those who enter the space.
By purchasing drawers and cubbys my papers and ephemera are organized, and because I like to be able to see my supplies everthing is in some type of an open container.
Now that my studio is organized, this week-end I am planning to tackle the bedroom. I like to change my bedding according to the season, which means it is time to bring in the spring, and put away the winter......I just looked out the window, and yes, it is once again snowing, but this week-end Spring "is" coming to my home.
......don't be willing to accept an ordinary life.......so put on your pearls girls and seize the moment.

Valentine's Day is quickly approaching.......a time of love and romance, and I want to remind everyone that pearls make a wonderful romantic gift.

Speaking of love and romance, the wedding season is beginning, and I am now doing a collage wedding cake topper. I am still perfecting my photographic skills, but hopefully you get the idea. There are real roses on the top, which opens to allow for a treasure to be saved from the wedding.

Today is my son Jason's 37th birthday......I wish him the happiest of days.
37, where did 37 years go? In my heart of hearts I don't feel any older than I
did 37 years ago.
It goes so very fast. It is imperative that we cherish each day, and enjoy what we are doing. Too many dislike their jobs, or their relationships, and to these people I say find something to do that you are passionate about, and find someone you care about, and who cares about you. Learn to take risks, and learn not to take yourself too seriously. A sense of humor is a must, and one needs to laugh often.
I am trying to live more artfully, and to be a bit more brave each day........so here's to you Jason, I love you, and hope that your life is full of passions and joy.......

I am learning something new today......actually I have been

trying to learn to work a digital camera for days, and today I have made a breakthrough. I still don't know how to work the flash, and here's a flash, neither do any of the many people

that I asked at work, including the young ones......how was that for a run on sentence!

Well, as you can see I have successfully downloaded a picture which I took this morning and was even able to rotate the angle. I think there is entire world waiting for me. Remember Valentine's Day is a great time to give a pearl necklace, and a better time to receive one.

Today the sun is shining, finally, and I am feeling energized to create.......life is not a problem to be solved, but a gift to be enjoyed.....so Put on your pearls girls and enjoy the day.

I recently purchased these charming, whimsical figurines
from Gail Rosenblum, artist extraordinaire. The heads
were from a Lladro statue that belonged to my parents
nearly 40 years ago .....it brings such joy to me every time
I look at them that I wanted to share.

It has been too long since last I wrote, and my New Year's resolution is to write more
frequently.........what has been going on since September, mmmm who remembers. I did see
the movie "Julie and Julia", which totally fed into my francophile need. I never followed Julia
Child in the 70's or the 80's, but have become somewhat obsessed with her, more as a person
than as a cook. She and Paul Child had the most beautiful, loving relationship......he absolutely
adored her. How wonderful to be adored by your husband. Julia Child became the person she
was through his encouragement and support.
I still think her recipes have too many steps, and ingredients, especially for someone such as myself who is ADD, but I am enjoying reading her cookbooks, which I recently purchased. I am
waiting for "My Life In France" by Julia to arrive. Did I mention that I bought the DVD, and watch it regularly. Speaking of the DVD....the introduction trailers to the movie are 2 current movies, and there is a trailer for "Sleepless in Seattle" and "Hanging Up"........why are they
advertising 2 movies from 10 years ago? Am I missing something here???????
Getting back to all things French.........French women have qualities that the rest of us just weren't given....self-confidence, a bit of arrogance, incredible style.........speaking of style, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that every woman should have and wear pearls. I would like to share my pearls of wisdom regarding the President's address to America's school age children........it is incomprehensible that people were upset with the thought that the President of the United States should address the children, those that are the future of our country. We live in a democracy where during an average election less than 30% of registered voters exercise their right to vote. Isn't it the most valuable lesson for a black man who studied hard, worked hard, and became the first black President to speak to our youth, and encourage them to get an education. The news quoted a school district that said they were not sure that the address was worth showing........what does that mean. The President of the United States wants to speak to the youth of America, to encourage them to stay in school, to tell them to work hard and achieve goals, and there are people who are against this. Is this perhaps the pinnacle of negativity.
President Obama told the students to take responsibility for themselves, to attend school, to work hard and be the best that each can be. He said not to let failures define them, but to teach them.
A person must acknowledge his failures as graciously as his successes. Winning teaches a person nothing, however the act of failing elicits great wisdom, the least of which it is more enjoyable to succeed.
We live in a world where many believe that they are entitled. I don't believe this to be true, there is no excuse for not trying, for not working hard.
So thank-you Mr. President for trying to inspire our children......and as always put on your pearls girls and be the best that you can be.

When I was at work today, someone asked a customer if it was a nice day, to which she replied that it was fine......fine, it is a glorious day today, no humidity, sunshine and 80*. What does it take for a person to appreciate the simple things in life. Have we all become so blase' and focused on rushing here and there that we don't see the beauty in each day.

It was a toss-up whether I write about the gorgeous hydrangeas from my garden or the stupidity of some school districts refusing to air the President's address to school children, and since it is magnificent out today, this last holiday week-end of the summer, I am writing about flowers and will discuss "ignorance" next week.

I just came in from picking hydrangeas from my garden, and I can not put into words how exquisite they are. The colors blend from sage to periwinkle to rose with the tiniest little dots in the center that resemble delicate seed pearls.

My suggestion to you is "put on your pearls" and take a stroll outside, and if anyone ever questions if there is a power greater than ourselves, please be reminded of Mother Nature and her creations of summer.

Today is the first day of my blog, and I am so excited.....
I plan to share thoughts of common sense and lack of common sense in the workplace and at home b/c isn't that what makes this world go 'round.
